What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is your website’s address. When a user types your domain name into their browser’s search bar, they are directed to your website. For instance, the domain name for Amazon® is “www.Amazon.com”. In most cases, your domain name is your business name, your name, or some sort of variation. Sometimes, domain names that match your business name and your name have already been purchased and registered by someone else; in this case, you will have to be creative and register an address that is easily recognized by your current customers.
Domain names have multiple endings (technically termed domain extensions). The three most familiar domain extensions are:

  • .com
  • .net
  • .org

The most popular domain extension is dot com.
